What to Do in Case of a Hurricane

Experiencing a hurricane or any natural disaster is not on a traveler’s list when making travel plans; however, these things can happen so it’s always best to be prepared. Especially when choosing to travel to destinations where a hurricane is possible, doing research ahead of time can make a world of difference. Hurricanes and natural disasters seem to get worse each year in severity and it would be upsetting to get caught in one of them without a plan in place.

The hurricane season in the Atlantic begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. During this time, hurricanes can form in the ocean and make their way to land. Many people travel during this period, so planning ahead is the best way to make sure travelers stay safe. Always know where to go if there is an evacuation for the hurricane. Look up the hurricane evacuation routes ahead of time and speak to hotel staff about procedures for evacuating.

For those staying in a hurricane area for a longer period of time, have a bag ready to go just in case. Sometimes travelers will unpack their belongings instead of living out a suitcase and if that’s the case they should have a “disaster bag” always packed and ready to go. The bag should have helpful items, such as a flashlight, first aid kit, batteries, cash and medications someone might need. The bag might be the only thing a visitor has in the case of an emergency.

Keep up communication with family and let everyone know the travel plan and the hurricane plan. If a hurricane were to happen, contact all family members and let them know of the situation.
