The smallest and tamest of Spain’s Balearic Islands is fairly quiet regardless of the time of year, but the off-season is even tamer as vacationers vacate and even local businesses restrict hours or shut down completely. Off-season travel to Menorca requires a bit of research and planning to see what’s open and operating, but with some preparation, visits can be just as enjoyable in the fall and spring as they can be in the summer. Here are the best ways to spend your days in Menorca.
Hike parts of the Cami de Cavalls. This hiking trail encircles the entire island and centuries ago was traveled by men on horseback to protect Menorca’s coastline. Now the trail is broken up into sections that can be hiked, cycled or ridden by horseback just as Menrocans have done for hundreds of years.
Walk the alleyways of Ciutadella. On the west coast of Menorca is the former Old Town of the island called Ciutadella. Its charming streets are filled with cozy cafés, eye-catching cathedrals and a cool, coastal breeze.
Climb to Menorca’s highest point. Travel by car, bike or foot to the top of El Toro to find a religious statue, restaurant and stunning views of the island and beyond. On a clear day, you can even catch sight of neighboring island Mallorca.
Catch a seafood dinner in Mahon. Stop into Menorca’s capital city for a bowl of lobster chowder, one of Menorca’s signature dishes. Check the hours of operation (and possibly even call in advance) to ensure opening hours.
