You’ve strategized and picked the perfect seat for your upcoming flight, leaving you with one less thing to worry about on departure day, when suddenly you receive an alert from the airline indicating your chosen seat has been changed for a random reason. These reasons could include a change in the aircraft or a shift in seating to accommodate a traveler with a disability or a large family. Unfortunately, if this happens, passengers are left with few options as it’s a condition they agree to when they purchase the ticket. However, there are a few ways to make light of the situation.
Ensure a refund if you’re moved to a less roomy seat. If you paid for a seat with extra legroom and are moved to a standard economy seat, make sure the airline is aware you’re entitled to a refund for this extra fee.
Negotiate with the gate agent. If your new seat isn’t to your liking, speak to the gate agent before the flight begins to board to see if there are other seats still available.
Chat with your fellow passengers. Once onboard and when boarding is seemingly complete, glance around the cabin to see if there are empty seats or ask to switch with someone if you eye a better seat.
Milk the benefits of being displaced. If you’re knocked out of a business-class seat and moved to economy, for example, make sure you’re rewarded with extra snacks or maybe a cocktail, or even compensated after the flight. Take down the name and information of the flight supervisor to follow up.
