The Hungarian capital has long been a favorite with backpackers traveling around Europe. It’s home to some amazing attractions, including historic monuments and great architecture, so read on to find out what you should see.
Budapest is home to a multitude of baths, but Széchenyi Thermal Baths are the most famous. This might be thanks to the great architecture of the buildings, or the fact you can bathe outdoors, but either way it’s definitely worth making the trip.
Next up is the State Opera House, an imposing structure on Andrássy Avenue. It’s widely regarded as one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, and it has been newly renovated for visitors. Check out the listings to book a show or attend one of the daily tours.
Over in Pest, the huge Hungarian Parliament Building is the third-largest parliament in the world. You can tour the interior or just take some photos of the Gothic Revival structure from outside.
Another impressive edifice is the Fisherman’s Bastion on the Buda side of the city. You can visit for free and enjoy great views over the capital.
If you’re done with sightseeing, make sure to check out the famous ruin pubs, a Budapest specialty. Set up in derelict buildings that were supposed to be demolished, these drinking holes popped up across the city. Szimpla Kert is the most famous one.
