If you’re confused about Real ID, you’re not alone. Should you get one? Do you really need one? Read on to learn the facts about this new form of ID that will be required for air travel and to enter federal facilities and nuclear power plants starting Oct. 1, 2020.
If you haven’t gotten your Real ID yet then you will be offered the chance to get it the next time you renew your license or identification card. It meets a set of Federal standards that must be followed by states when issuing drivers licenses and identification cards.
The good news for international travelers is passports already meet the Real ID standards and are an acceptable form of identification — just make sure you start bringing it with you on all domestic flights.
While a passport meets the requirements of the Real ID act, it is important to note the Real ID will not take the place of a passport. Therefore you will still need your passport for all international travel.
Despite federal requirements, not all states are issuing Real IDs at this time. New York, Vermont, Minnesota, Michigan and Washington are currently issuing Enhanced Drivers Licenses, which meet the same criteria and will be accepted as an alternate form of identification for the time being.
Check out the Department of Homeland Security website (https://www.dhs.gov/real-id-public-faqs) for additional information. If you plan to get your Real ID you can do so at your local DMV. Required documentation is more stringent than getting a traditional drivers license and varies by state so check out your local DMV website to make sure you have the appropriate documents before scheduling your appointment.
