Where to Celebrate Oktoberfest Outside of Munich

Every late September and early October, travelers from around the world congregate in Munich, Germany, for what is arguably the world’s biggest beer celebration: Oktoberfest. Pints of Bavarian beer, giant pretzels and lederhosen are the trademark sights at this world-famous festival, and Oktoberfest has become so popular other cities replicated the party on their own turf. Here are a few other places to pull up a bench to a long communal table and toast to the fall season.

Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario

As the fall leaves change color in Canada, Canadians and visitors alike celebrate the season with the world’s second-largest Oktoberfest that lasts seven days in mid-October. With an annual headcount of approximately 700,000 participants during the seven days, the festival coincides with Canada’s Thanksgiving Day, giving Canadians even more reasons to celebrate.

Blumenau, Brazil

For two weeks in mid- to late-October, Brazil gets into the boozy spirit with its own Oktoberfest in a town founded by German immigrants. Blumenau pays tribute to its German roots by preserving the traditional architecture and cultural activities, which of course includes Oktoberfest. The closest airport is Navegantes, which usually requires a connecting flight through São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro.
