Did you know Panamá offers one of the most concentrated collections of UNESCO World Heritage sites? With Colonial Transisthmian Route recognized by UNESCO, it’s the perfect time to explore Panamá’s Historic Circuit, three interconnected heritage sites that form a historic path of commerce, culture and conquest. Travelers will embark on journeys rich in storytelling with stops at 16th-century ruins, Caribbean fortresses, jungle trails and more.

The Colonial Transisthmian Route

This newly recognized corridor starts travelers in the Pacific Ocean and ends in the Caribbean, linking Panama City, Panama Viejo and Casco Antiguo with Portobelo, San Lorenzo and through jungle trails like Camino de Cruces. Travelers will journey land, river and seas. Explore centuries-old trade routes once filled with pirates while learning about the history and cultural connection.

Fortifications on the Caribbean Side

Discover Panamá’s colonial legacy at Portobelo and San Lorenzo. Visitors can walk through cannon-lined forts and see stunning views of the Caribbean Sea as it journeys through the Panama Canal. These sites were once some of the Spanish Crown’s most vital commercial ports but now serve as a highlight of colonial military architecture and hint at a dramatic history shaped by 17th- and 18th- century piracy, strategic defense and trans-Atlantic trade. Additionally, Portobelo is a center for Congo culture brought by slaves from Central Africa. Now, the heritage is still present through traditional dance, music and spiritual rituals, all recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Archaeological Site of Panama Viejo & Casco Antiguo

Panama Viejo, founded in 1519, was the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. It was later destroyed by pirate Henry Morgan in 1671. Travelers are invited to explore the ancient ruins. Highlights include the cathedral tower overlooking the modern city, convent walls and colonial foundations. Visitors will get an inside look into Panamá’s early history. After the ruins, head to Panama Viejo Museum to learn more and maybe even take home local treasure from the Artisanal Center. Next, head to the relocated city, Casco Antiguo, a colonial-era district that offers a hub of culture, architecture and entertainment. Casco Antiguo also serves as a gastronomic hub and holds recognition of Creative Gastronomic City by UNESCO.
