New York State is home to more than 50 ski resorts and, in January, the fun really starts to heat up (or cool down…). So, where should you go for the best experiences this winter?
Try Lake Placid first, especially if you’re planning to travel in February. The two-time Olympic Winter Games host will welcome the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup at Olympic Jumping Complex, Feb. 7–12, 2025. While in town, make sure to head to Whiteface Mountain Ski Center for expert-approved skiing on the highest vertical drop in the Eastern United States. If you’re there Jan. 18–19, you can participate in the Whiteface Vertical Challenge, where skiers of all levels compete in a race for the most vertical feet.
If, though, you’re looking for more of a family-friendly or just low-key winter snow sports experience, consider the Catskills. Hunter Mountain offers a nice blend of family-friendly and more advanced slopes, as well as lots of family-friendly lodging. Nearby Hunter Mountain fire tower, the highest in New York, makes a can’t-miss hike if you’re willing to strap on your snow shoes. The Catskills also offers plenty to love even if you’re just ready to relax after a busy holiday season. At Windham Mountain Club, enjoy relaxing experiences like Snowga, which blends snowshoeing with yoga.
