Destinations / Europe

As soccer leagues in other nations grapple with rising ticket prices and fan discontent, Germany is held up as an example of how to do things right.

Tickets are cheaper and the matchday experience unrivaled, according to new fans from around the world. The top league, known as Bundesliga, is home to European giants such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Schalke, but you can get tickets for as little as $18. Compare that to around $45 for top teams in England, and you’ve got the first reason people love German soccer so much.

You will also find you can stand and watch soccer in Germany, as you have been able to do for years and years. In the United Kingdom, the practice ended a couple of decades ago, but sitting down for the whole game doesn’t exactly add to the atmosphere.

You can also drink beer on the terraces in a remarkable show of trust toward supporters. In other countries fans are banned from doing so due to worries over drunkenness and violence, but in Germany it’s common practice.

In many cities, your match ticket will also get you from the city center to the stadium on public transport. Just show your ticket to the bus or tram driver and they will let you on. It’s touches like this that make German soccer so great to watch.
