The smallest of Japan’s four main islands, Shikoku boasts a wide variety of experiences, sites and activities for locals and visitors alike. In addition to the island taking part in the Setouchi Triennale art festival this year, the island awaits those looking for their next adventure.
Hike Mount Tsurugi
As the second-tallest mountain in western Japan, Mount Tsurugi invites hikers to take on its more than 6,000 feet of rock and trails. The mountain offers both hiking trails and a quick chairlift ride for novice hikers. At the top, explore the shrine, mountain huts and wooden boardwalks. Plan your hike on a clear day to witness Wakayama, the Seto Inland Sea and Cape Ashizuri from the top.
Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage
Trace the steps of the eighth- and ninth-century monk Kukai, who founded the Shingon school of Buddhism. Known as Shikoku Henro, travelers can visit all of the sites where Kukai was believed to have trained and complete a pilgrimage of their own. With 88 temples located across Shikoku, visitors can visit any temple in any order and at any time of the day by any means of travel. Additionally, many local residents embrace osettai, a tradition where residents offer food and drink to pilgrims making their journey.
Udon Taxi
Considered one of Kagawa Prefecture’s biggest attractions, the Udon Taxi can take guests to one of its more than 800 udon restaurants. Each Udon Taxi driver endures a rigorous testing process to become an Udon Taxi driver. In addition to passing tests regarding all of the udon shops in Kagawa, each drive must also be able to make udon noodles themselves by hand. Guests looking for the best udon restaurants can rely on the recommendations and help of Udon Taxi.
Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddle Boarding in Shimanto River
Venture onto the Shimanto River by paddle board or kayak to see some of the region’s best wildlife. As part of a guided tour, the half-day trip takes paddleboarders and kayakers through rapids, by Chinkabashi Bridge and over calm turquoise waters. Guests may even spot the many bird species living in the area.
Saijo Festival
Held every October in the Ehime Prefecture, the Saijo Festival displays stunning craftmanship and art through the more than 150 danjiri, or large wooden floats, and mikoshi, or portable shrines. The display goes through Saijo City before ending at Isono Shrine. At the shrine, the structures are handed over to the gods as an offering before thousands of paper lanterns are lit up over the Kamogawa riverbed.
