The festival marks a unique moment in time. In 2011, a tsunami hit Rikuzentakata, Japan, and, in the process, sent a boat christened Kamome into the ocean. Two years later, in 2013, that boat washed ashore in Crescent City. Now, the festival celebrates the sister cities’ relationship and highlights organizations such as Kamome Foundation (which supports cultural, educational and economic partnerships between Crescent City and Rikuzentakata).
The week-long event includes Japanese-inspired cultural activities, screenings, tours and workshops, as well as Taste of Japan, a ticketed event with tastings, traditional music and dancing, and a silent auction. A broader restaurant week offers specials at city-wide restaurants.

“We’re excited to see the Kamome Festival continue to grow bigger each year, bringing our community and visitors together to experience a wide range of free cultural activities supported by our local businesses, nonprofits and partners. Helping our kids and residents understand the importance of emergency preparedness remains a top priority, and our sister city story reflects that commitment to resilience and connection. This year we’re especially honored to welcome 21 delegates from Rikuzentakata, as well as Consul General Kotaro Otsuki and Consul Takumi Kurioiwa,” said Eric Wier, city manager, Crescent City.

We all know a trip to New Orleans can get a little wild, from spending days exploring sites before hitting the town and wandering Bourbon Street at night. Sometimes it may feel like the city is non-stop, and you find yourself needing a vacation after the vacation.
