Yoga Design Lab launched its collection of yoga mats made from natural tree rubber and recycled plastic bottle microfibers last year.
‘The goal was to create a beautiful, highly functional product with the smallest eco footprint possible. Countless yoga mats end up in landfills because they’re made from non-recyclable, hazardous materials. While our overall goal is to limit plastics usage, at least we can start repurposing what’s already out there and keep it from our oceans,” said Chad Turner, founder and designer, Yoga Design Lab.
“I was seated in the back of a packed yoga class while on vacation in Ubud, Bali. Looking around, all I saw was a sea of unoriginal, massed produced, solid colored mats. My thinking was, there must be a way of creating a highly functional product that was also aesthetically beautiful. So the journey began. Long story short, I sold my stuff, packed up a couple bags and moved to Bali with the goal of creating a stunning line of yoga products that inspire more people to get excited about yoga,” added Turner.
In addition to yoga mats, Yoga Design Lab also just released its line of yoga mat towels and hand towels, also eco-conscious. Bales of plastic bottle waste are supplied by recycle collectors and yarn manufacturers separate colored and clear bottles. Then, PET bottles are sterilized, dried and crushed into small chips. The chips are then heated and undergo a winding and threading process to create fibers.
The beautiful yoga mats, which you’d never guess are made with recycled plastic, start at $56, and come in an array of fun patterns. Mat towels and hand towels start at $18.
