Destinations / Asia

Otherwise known as the Sapporo Snow Festival, this annual event is one of the most popular in Japan.

Held each February since 1950, when teenagers started building snow statues in Sapporo’s Odori Park, Yuki Matsuri has grown ever since. It now boasts huge ice and snow sculptures in myriad designs, drawing visitors from around the world.

A reported 2 million people visit the festival each year, taking in three sites: Odori, Suskino and Tsu Dome. Odori is the original and best, where the large snow sculptures are found. You can walk through the park to marvel at the works or climb the Sapporo TV Tower for a bird’s eye view.

Susukino is home to around 100 ice sculptures, while the Tsu Dome is a family-friendly area that offers snow slides, snow rafting and a number of sculptures.

Sapporo is also well worth a visit in its own right. The city is the capital of Hokkaido and the fifth-biggest in the whole of Japan. It has been developed rapidly since the mid-19th century, when the area was home to less than 10 people. Authorities chose it as the site of the administrative capital of Hokkaido island, and it has grown until the present day.
