How to Find Safe Drinking Water While Traveling

Tips / Safety

When traveling to developed, first world countries, there is normally no concern for the state of the region’s drinking water, but when visiting less-developed regions (Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia), it’s something to consider that may subconsciously escape the minds of frequent and novice travelers alike. Before jetting off to an under-the-radar destination, research the drinking water situation and keep these tips handy.

Research. This first step should be completed before you even start packing. If the area you are visiting does not have potable water, you may want to consider packing a water-purifying drinking bottle or another portable method of filtering your water before consuming it, especially if you will be camping or in situations where plastic water bottles are not easily accessible.

Pay attention. When buying bottled water, inspect the seal to make sure it has not been tampered with. If served an iced beverage at a restaurant, consider the fact the ice may have come from tap water. Noticing these small mishaps (like using bottled water to brush your teeth) can prevent potential discomfort caused by accidentally consuming contaminated water.

Treat your own water. If you prefer to take decontamination into your own hands or if you’ve run out of funds for bottled water, boil tap water on the stove of your hotel’s kitchen, or pack Potable Aqua tablets to toss into a pitcher of questionable water before drinking. There are also heaps of other water-purifying tools on the market, including the SteriPEN.
