Destinations / Europe

Solo female travel is on the rise and finding the right destinations for a safe and enjoyable experience is paramount. These five European islands have been named some of the best for female travelers looking to embark on a solo trip:

Madeira, Portugal

Madeira, Portugal, ranks first as best solo female travel destination. Women generally feel safe while living in or exploring the island. Additionally, the island scored high on the walkability scale and is one of the most affordable destinations regarding hotel stays and dining.

Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza, Spain, comes in at second place with a strong safety and walkability score. Although it has the reputation of a party island, Ibiza is generally safe, and locals areknown for their friendly and welcoming attitude.

Lanzarote, Spain

Lanzarote ranks high in women’s safety rating, offers more budget-friendly hotel rates and boasts a high walkability score. Women solo travelers can easily explore local attractions without feeling unsafe or depending on transportation.

Fuerteventura, Spain

As the third Spanish destination, Fuerteventura comes in fourth. The destination offers a strong safety score, affordable hotel stays per night and a lower cost of living.

Corfu, Greece

Corfu offers a spot where female solo travelers can explore safely and comfortably thanks to its high safety rating. Additionally, the island has the lowest average hotel price and the most hotels among European destinations.

Island Hopping, the guided island-hopping tour company, conducted this research, looking at seven key factors: women, peace and security index, English language proficiency of the population, cultural friendliness, walkability, hotel availability, accommodation costs and overall living expenses. Each island was ranked on a 0–100 scale based on these factors.

“When women travel alone, practical factors matter as much as tourist attractions. Safety after dark, ease of getting around without taxis, and widespread English knowledge make a big difference when seeking directions or help in unexpected situations. Compact destinations, like islands or small cities, generally offer safer experiences for women, and the crime rates tend to be lower. With small communities, everyone knows each other, helping to ensure safer conditions for visitors,” said Helle Seuren, director, Island Hopping.
