Can’t get away to Europe this fall? You may be able to find a “dupe” destination stateside. A recent study conducted by BLogic Systems identified 10 towns throughout the United States that feel like a European getaway, but don’t require any international travel. Some can even deliver cost savings!
According to the study, which looked at a range of factors, including immigrant heritage, local food, culture and more, these are the five U.S. towns most likely to give you a European-style experience:
- New Glarus, Wisconsin
- Pella, Iowa
- Holland, Michigan
- Solvang, California
- New Orleans, Louisiana
New Glarus, according to BLogic, is a close match for Zürich, Switzerland, but travel comes at a much cheaper cost. Pella, Iowa, the study claims, is similar to Amsterdam, as is Holland, Michigan. Meanwhile, Solvang, California, is a good alternative to Scandinavia, while New Orleans’ French Quarter makes a good stand-in for Paris.
“Nearly half of Americans dream of visiting Europe. But affordability keeps getting in the way: Around a third say they can’t afford to travel at all right now,” said a BLogic Systems spokesperson. “And honestly, this summer might not be the worst time to skip it anyway. Europe is baking in record heat, and around 80 percent of homes there have no AC to escape it. For anyone on a tight budget who still wants something that feels exotic, these towns are a pretty good option.”
