Where to Go for Donuts in Portland

Tips / Destination

Portland, Ore., is known for many things, particularly rain and coffee. Nothing goes better with those two things than a donut. Good thing the city has this triple threat figured out. The most famous donut shop in town is probably the classic Voodoo Donuts. It is here that you can eat a “Pot Hole” or a “Voodoo Bubble” while watching locals and tourists make their way through the streets. These donuts were designed to be paired with people watching and they are all perfect, just the way they are.

And yet, if a donut that is all taste and no traffic is what you are after, Portland will provide; here are just some of the PDX donut highlights.

For gourmet donuts, go to Coco Donuts. This shop offers homemade donuts and home-roasted coffee. Try the simple vanilla cake donut and you will understand how good this place is.

Tonalli’s Donuts and Cream — there is no website for this place and old school is the only way to describe this bakery at 2805 NE Alberta St. Open from 7 a.m. until midnight, you can find any variety you are craving. Or try Annie’s Donuts — they’re just good. Like Tonalli’s ,this is another old-school donut shop. They’re not online, they’re making donuts, so visit them at 3449 NE 72nd Ave.

Pips Original Donuts and Chai, it’s a van! There is also a permanent location. For a small house-made chai blend to go with your light and delicious cinnamon and sugar donuts, go to Pips. Or chase after the truck. Either way, you won’t regret it.

Come to think of it, when was the last time anyone regretted eating too many donuts? It has just never happened, so try them all.
