Tips / Safety

Yesterday, TSA began enforcing new identification guidelines, a change that’s been a long-time coming. Now, travelers must show a REAL ID-compliant, state-issued ID in order to fly on domestic flights, in lieu of a non-compliant driver’s license (some other forms of identification, such as passports, will still be acceptable).

The TSA estimates, currently, more than 80 percent of passengers do have a compliant ID, but if you’re among the remaining 20 percent of passengers who do need a new means of identification, you’ll need to prioritize that before your next flight. If you are unable to show correct ID at the security checkpoint, you risk delays, additional screening processes and the possibility you will not be allowed on your flight at all.

So, why is it even a big deal you have this ID at all? Why the change?

According to a press release TSA recently issued on the subject, “The Real ID requirement bolsters safety by making fraudulent IDs harder to forge, thwarting criminals and terrorists. TSA will implement REAL ID effectively and efficiently, continuing to ensure the safety and security of passengers while also working to minimize operational disruptions at airports.”
