Tips / Destination

Central America is home to some great street food, and Nicaragua is a major part of that. Here are the best snacks to try when you’re in the country.

The first is the famous quesillo, a thick tortilla topped with cheese, pickled onion and sour cream. You’ll see these everywhere.

Next up is vigoron, a combination of fried pork skin, yuca and pickled cabbage. It might sound like a strange combination but it’s really tasty.

Nacatamals are one of Nicaragua’s national dishes — a large tamal, or corn dough parcel, made with pork and boiled in a banana leaf. Look out for these on the weekends, when they are usually eaten for breakfast with a tortilla and coffee.

Especially popular in the north of the country are güirilas. These savory-sweet pancakes are served with cheese and cream, a common combination in Nicaragua.

If you are looking for something to nibble on, try tajadas. These thin plantain strips are fried and bagged like crisps, and you’ll often see them sold at bus stations for long journeys.

Nicaragua has a rich street food culture, so try out some of these dishes to eat like the locals do.
