Tips / Travel

Even with reward cards and frequent-flyer miles, flying is expensive and seems like it is getting more so by the week. Any way to save a little on transportation so you can invest a little more in the trip itself is helpful. One of these ways is to think about when to book your flight. Booking at certain times or on certain days can make a huge difference, but it can be hard to keep track of. This is an attempt to break it down into some basic guidelines.

First, consider domestic versus international flights since this will matter with regard to when you should be booking. When dealing with a domestic flight, try booking a month in advance if possible and look to purchase before Tuesday’s end. This ensures the best flight prices usually. If you are looking around holidays, there are moments when airlines like Southwest drop prices at the last minute. This is clearly not a recipe for reliability. If you want to change your flight, however, and pocket the savings, this can work out well. There are sites like Air Help that can assist you with finding even better deals.

When considering international flights, there is definitely a threshold for finding the best fares. It is about one–two months out from your flight. If you look more than three months in advance, prices will be high and, if you look less than three weeks out, you may have missed some good opportunities. Cheap Air offers more advice.
