A theory first went viral on TikTok, claiming travelers tested the idea they could get from check-in to their gate in just 30 minutes when traveling with carry-on luggage only. The appeal of a shortcut when traveling by plane is relatable when considering long check-in lines and security lines. In fact, did you know, according to Airports Council International, average security wait times at major international airports have increased by 20 percent since 2019, with peak times going past 40 minutes in places like JFK, LAX and Heathrow (LHR)?
The theory sparked a trend where thousands attempted it, but does it actually work? In short, it all depends on several factors.
Airport Size and Layout
Smaller regional airports with fewer terminals and passengers are easier to test this theory than massive hubs like Atlanta (ATL), New York (JFK) or Los Angeles (LAX).
Security Staffing and Technology
We’ve all been there; you show up to the airport prepared to go through security, expecting it to be like the last airport you were at where you didn’t need to remove your laptop or liquids. But as you near the screening, you realize this checkpoint has outdated machinery. You’re left scrambling to remove the necessary items from your bag. Try to research beforehand if your airport uses biometric scanners or automated security lanes, as these process travelers far faster.
Time of Day
Early mornings and late evenings typically see shorter lines, so opt for these times if you want to avoid any waits.
Are there surefire tips to save time, even if you’re not testing the 30-minute theory? Absolutely. Travel light and stick to carry-on luggage to avoid the check-in line. If your airline has a mobile app (most do), download the app to access your boarding pass and receive real-time gate updates. Familiarize yourself with the airport layout and security checkpoints before arriving, too.
In other words, while this new theory is feasible, it’s highly suggested travelers plan more realistically. Many things happen out of our control, so it’s always best to avoid missing your flight and allow for extra time. No matter how prepared you are, unexpected delays occur, so take this added stress out of your trip entirely.
These tips and factors were compiled in a study by Transfeero, an online platform streamlining airport transfer bookings globally.
