Destination Now Home to a Tequila Route

Lovers of tequila can now take the ultimate tequila-themed trip. Mexico’s state of Jalisco recently announced the launch of Los Altos Tequila Route, a brand-new experience expanding the region’s offerings around Mexico’s most celebrated spirit. The tequila route connects eight municipalities in the highlands, spanning 75 experiences, as well as more than 530 food and beverage establishments.

Sixteen tequila houses are integrated into the route, plus boutique haciendas and hotels in the aptly named Tequila Triangle (Aranda, Tepatitlán and Atotonilco); immersive agave field tours; farm-to-table dining; and cultural traditions unique to the highlands communities.

The new route highlights the distinct tequila produced in the region. This type of tequila is known for its sweeter and fruitier notes thanks to the state’s high elevation and red volcanic clay soil. Distilleries on the route open for visits include Patrón, Don Julio, Sieta Leguas and La Alteña.

Along the route, participate in guided tequila tastings, learn about the tequila-making process from cooking agave to distillation to aging, see where blue Weber agave is grown, and more.

The eight municipalities featured in the tequila route include Acatic, Tepatitlán, San Ignacio Cerro Gordo, Arandas, Jesús María, Atotonilco El Alto, Ayotlám and Tototlán.

And in anticipation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the route, in collaboration with tequila houses, developed experiences like:

• Stays in cabins, ATV adventures, agave field tours and tasting workshops at El Tesoro de los Altos by Tequila Campo Azul
• Equestrian activities among agave fields at Clase Azul Interpretive Museum & Los González Reserve
• Tequila-paired meals featuring regional cuisine at Casa Loy
• Farm-to-table dinner by Tequila San Matías
