Forget European summer — Japan summer has taken over. It seems like everyone on my social media feed was in Japan this summer, and I now understand why …

Many people visiting Japan for the first time typically travel the “golden route,” which courses through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Of course, these amazing cities are all admittedly must-sees, but with the influx of tourists, they have been overcrowded, making it not as enjoyable to explore.

So, why not venture beyond Japan’s busiest tourist cities to places with similar vibes but fewer crowds?

Nagoya

Nagoya may be smaller than Tokyo, but it offers a similar atmosphere. The futuristic shopping mall is a must, where you can walk around, browse local and international fashion, and check out the illuminated spaceship roof. Nagoya is also rich in culture and offers attractions like Nagoya Castle and Atsuta Shrine, one of Japan’s most sacred Shinto sites. Don’t leave without trying some local cuisine like hitsumabushi (grilled eel) and miso katsu, a deep-fried breaded pork cutlet covered in Hatcho miso sauce.

Kanazawa

Thanks to its traditional architecture, tea houses and narrow lanes, Kanazawa is often referred to as “little Kyoto.” The destination is known for its gold leaf production, tea ceremonies and ceramics. While visiting Kanazawa, make sure to visit Kenroku-en Garden, Higashi Chaya District, the samurai district and Omicho Market.

Fukuoka

Fukuoka is much like Osaka regarding its rich food culture. It’s the birthplace of Tonkotsu ramen, a pork-based broth now loved around the world. The city also offers a friendly atmosphere and exciting nightlife. Don’t miss the night markets, karaoke and traditional izakayas.
