Planning a trip to Italy soon? Here are some etiquette tips to follow to ensure a respectful and memorable trip.

Etiquette at Religious and Historical Monuments

When visiting Italy’s religious and historical attractions, there are certain rules you must follow. At the Vatican, dress appropriately by covering both shoulders and knees. Hats should be removed before entering the monument. Avoid t-shirts with offensive graphics, tank tops and vests. Additionally, silence is a must throughout the visit, especially in the prayer areas. These customs also apply to other sacred sites like the Pantheon and basilicas.

“Dressing modestly is vital when visiting sacred sites, especially if you want to avoid being denied entry, which can really ruin your visit,” said Julia Charity, Vatican tour guide, Walks of Italy. “Women should wear tops with sleeves and avoid strapless and low-cut tops, while skirts, dresses, and shorts must reach at least knee-length.”

At landmarks like the Colosseum and Pompeii, treat these sites with care and do not climb the ruins or take wild photos that could damage these sites; these historical sites need to be preserved so future generations can experience it as well.

Photography is banned at the Sistine Chapel, and travelers who try to sneak a photo face consequences.

Dining Etiquette

Meal times, especially dinners, are a revered tradition in Italy, often an event in themselves. Italians don’t start dinner until 8 p.m., so if you book a table too early, it can be seen as unusual, or you could even be the only one in the restaurant. All meals are served in multiple courses and take time to come out, emphasizing the country’s social and leisurely nature of dining.

“Italian meals are meant to be shared with good company and savored slowly,” explained Valentina Telese, Italian tours director, Walks of Italy.  “It’s very Italian to go outside with all the family. One difference that some customers tell us they are surprised about is how many children are outside with the family in the evening and having dinner late, especially in the summer.”

Tipping Etiquette
On the topic of dining, Italian tipping customs are different from the ones in the United States. Tipping while dining out is not obligatory, although a small figure or rounding up the total is always appreciated. Most restaurants include a service charge on the bill, which often counts as a tip. It is also not uncommon to offer tour guides or staff at hotels a small tip.
