Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa celebrates its 45th anniversary this year and, with this milestone, the oceanfront resort enters a new era filled with sustainability, cultural connection and regenerative hospitality.

Known for its beautiful ocean views and hands-on cultural programming, the resort plans to deepen its commitment to Mālama ‘āina, meaning care for the land, through a variety of impactive initiatives led by its landscape manager, Jason “JD” Dennis. The resort also hopes to restore balance to its ecosystem while offering guests unique opportunities to learn, explore and connect.

Over the past year, the landscaping team has started to shift toward regenerative landscaping by using natural pest control methods and BioComplete Soil Amendments, which earned them a Gold Certification for Reef-Friendly Landscaping from Maui Nui Resource Council. The resort also produces their own compost and liquid inoculants, which helps restore vital microbes in the soil and enhances nutrient cycles and reduces runoff, which then protects Maui’s coral reefs from harmful pollutants. Altogether, these new practices help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Additionally, the resort installed a pollinator garden, home to native Hawaiian plants, and integrated canoe plants into the grounds to support biodiversity. These gardens grow key ingredients for restaurant dishes like lemongrass, rosemary, onions and chilis.

Guests can get in on the movement with The Palace Genki Toss, which allows visitors to help support the local marine ecosystems by creating and tossing Genki Balls, natural mud balls made from clay, minerals and beneficial microbes, into the ocean. The balls help purify the water, promote coral reef health and reduce harmful algae in the water.

And every morning, guests can set out on a guided tour through the resort’s landscapes. On this tour guests can explore the native plants brought to the islands by the Polynesian voyages many years ago. Throughout the journey, guests learn about the traditional ahupua’a land system, the cultural need for each plant and the rest of the resort’s efforts to treat the land.
