While Africa might not have the best reputation when it comes to LGBT rights, Cape Town is definitely an exception to the rule. Africa’s “Pink City” is the gay capital of South Africa and home to many LGBT-friendly establishments. The country even legalized same sex weddings in 2006.

If you’re looking for good eats while in Cape Town, you’ll want to stop by The Kitchen, run by outgoing owner Karen Dudley, who just so happens to be a lesbian. The restaurant serves up only healthy dishes laced with hummus, beets and avocado and was a favorite of Michelle Obama during her visit.

Green Point is the de facto melting pot of Cape Town and widely considered the “gay area” of town with many establishments run by and open to LGBT patrons. Crew Bar is popular among the young crowd hoping to party while Beaulah Bar is the only all-lesbian bar in Cape Town. Beef Cake is the most popular around town and has daily themes for everyone in the LGBT community.

If you’re in need of a place to stay, the Table Bay Hotel is highly inclusive and in a great location.

Anyone who might be concerned about walking freely in Cape Town as part of the LGBT community has nothing to worry about; it’s a safe and inviting city for all who visit and continues to embrace diversity at every opportunity.
