It has been said if you want to live like the Queen, stay at the Biltmore. Nothing says old-world glamour like this stately affair in downtown Los Angeles. Built in 1923 by the firm Schultze and Weaver, this historic landmark was designed as a destination hotel for the most distinguished guests of the day.
Artist Giovanni Smeraldi, whose work appears in the White House and Vatican, painted the lobby frescoes. Eight Oscar ceremonies were held here, fitting since it is also the birthplace of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. The likes of Louis B. Mayer, Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda walked these halls. It may seem a little cheesy, but go ahead and wander the ground floor and you will find a small picture gallery of these bygone years.
At the same time, marvel at the sky-high ceilings and elegance of the multiple lobbies and, whatever you do, don’t forget to descend the grand staircase. The hotel fell out of fashion in the last decades, but with the revival of the downtown area in general — Broadway in particular — this hotel is coming back as a great option for exploring parts of the city on foot while living with a piece of history. The rooms are not large, but they are comfortable, elegant and less than $250 a night, which, for the location, is a deal.
