No, It’s Not Santorini: The Hidden Spanish Town You’ve Never Heard Of

In the very south of Spain is a Santorini-esque town tucked away within the Andalusian mountains, just minutes from the Mediterranean Sea. Often known as “Spain’s most beautiful and well-preserved village,” Frigiliana is lined with white-washed buildings, narrow and hilly cobblestoned streets, and colorful doors often framed by potted plants.

The town has ancient origins. At the Archaeological Museum are artifacts from the region dating back to the Neolithic era, with items from the Phoenicians, Moors and Christians also on display.

Simply walking up and down the streets of the historic part of town, you’ll see architecture from the Moorish-Mudejar era. The Church of Saint Anthony, built in 1676, is a fascinating structure, for it blends aspects of the town’s rich history. The building was constructed on the site of an old mosque after the Moors were expelled, and the bell tower of the current church is the former minaret of the old mosque.

The village is the only place in Europe to produce sugar cane honey and actually has the last factory producing it on the continent. In operation since 1725, the factory has contributed to the town’s identity, with Frigiliana even hosting the annual Sugar Cane Honey Festival. Sugar cane honey is often used on dishes like fried eggplant, cheeses and even popcorn.

One noticeable feature of the town is its many different-colored doors; each color represents a different family owning the house, and neighboring buildings with the same color indicate the same family name owns them. (And, cat lovers, be sure to look out for friendly cats wandering the streets or sometimes lounging in chairs).

In the daytime, boutique shops selling hand-painted pottery, fans and prints; jewelry; and clothes are open for business.

You’ll also find the epitome of a Spanish tapas and wine afternoon, with places like Bar Vinos El Lagar, offering a wide selection of wines and tapas to enjoy outside. For a heartier lunch with unbeatable views, Restaurante El Jardín serves many authentic regional dishes.

Expect to get in a good workout exploring Frigiliana; it’s hilly and has steps in many places, but it’s completely worth the visit.
