Tips / Destination

Want to see the best of Luxembourg City in a convenient amount of time? A circular walking tour can be what you need to enjoy the most picturesque sights in the city in just one afternoon.

Start out at one of the popular spots in the city, the Palais Grand-Ducal. From here, it’s easy to wind your way through a few small streets, each with their own historic charm. Take Rue de l’Eau as if you were heading to the back of the palace, but take it all the way to the large intersection which puts you out next to Eglise Saint-Michel, a large, 17th-century Catholic church (the city’s oldest religious site). Take a right onto Rue Large and enjoy the quaint shops and art galleries you pass on your way.

As Rue Large turns into Montee du Gründ, you’ll find you’re offered a beautiful view of the historic district you’re slowly making your way toward. Keep in mind, this is a somewhat steep walk, so you may be a little out of breath by the end. This road leads you right into the cute Grund neighborhood, known for its medieval architecture. Spend some time enjoying the scenery, and be sure to get photos of the beautiful river.

If, at the end of Montee du Gründ, you take a left, cross the bridge and turn left again, you’ll be faced with a fork in the road. Go right, and follow the Rue de Treves to begin your ascent out of the valley. When the Rue de Treves forks again, go right and follow the road until it brings you to the partial remnants of the medieval fortress associated with the Casemates. You can’t miss the striking stonework on your left, and exploring it further will take you down through the ruin and onto a walkway that crosses the Alzette River. Here, you have a great view of the Bock Casemates towering above you. Various walking paths cross over to your right, and follow the river.

You can then take the walking path nearest the river, and follow it along the waterfront for a bit, until the path ends and you find to your left a small array of bars and restaurants. Head straight and, at the intersection, take a right onto Rue de Clausen, crossing the river once again. When you shortly take a left onto Rue Malakoff, you’ll be in a more residential area, which leads to a beautiful green space right in the heart of the city. When Rue Malakoff forks off into Rue Jules Wilhelm, you’ll want to follow this winding road upward. Be sure to catch a photo of Malakoff Tower as you pass by.

This leisurely stroll through the scenic wooded areas of Luxembourg will eventually lead you to a newer neighborhood in the city, as the road turns into Rue des Muguets. Turn left onto Rue des Coquelicots, which turns into Rue Erasme, and then go left on Avenue John F. Kennedy. This neighborhood is Kirchberg, and it’s where you’ll find the European Parliament and the Court of Justice of the European Union, among other landmarks.

Avenue John F. Kennedy will take you over a large bridge with sweeping views of the valley below, which you just explored, allowing you to see the space from an entirely new vantage point. Keep going to make your way back into the city center, turning left onto Avenue de la Porte-Neuve.

Then, it’s just another left onto Rue des Bains, which turns into Rue Willy Goergen, a right onto Cote d’Eich, a left onto Rue du Cure and you’re back at the Palais Grand-Ducal, where you started.
