Tips / Safety

With all the political instability and conflict in the world, international travel comes with more danger than ever. Your trip could be ruined by numerous perils such as extreme weather, financial crisis, illness, lost or stolen documents, missed connections, natural disasters, pick pockets, strikes and countless other hazards. It’s important to have contingency plans for any dangerous situations you may encounter.

Visit the U.S. Department of State’s website and read the travel advisories for the destinations you’re visiting. Have the phone numbers for the closest U.S. Consulate and local police stations handy. Also, check the local news in your destination.

Always be aware of your surroundings if you don’t want to become a robber’s victim. Keep eyes in the back of your head and make sure you’re not being followed when walking around a new city. Look people in the eyes when walking around the city to show you’re aware. Avoid dark streets at night, even if they look empty. Try to go out with another person or group. Don’t wear a purse with a loose strap because pickpockets will cut the strap and run off with the purse.

Pay attention to your location and street signs. Have an actual map of the city or one preloaded on your phone in case you don’t have service. Never take a ride from an unlicensed taxi. Use your map to check the taxi driver is, in fact, taking you the right way.

Don’t draw attention to yourself as a tourist. When in a destination where locals do not have smartphones, don’t flash your iPhone 7 around. Step inside a restaurant or store when you need to use it. Leave your jewelry, watches and designer purses at home or in the hotel. Dressing like a local draws less attention.

Purchase travel insurance prior to leaving in case you fall ill or have an accident. Make sure you have any vaccinations required for your destination. If you take any medication, pack enough for while you’re away. Don’t bring any unnecessary credit cards or IDs on the trip. When walking around the city only bring enough money for the day.

Follow these tips to protect yourself while traveling.
