Destinations / Europe

One cabin on Sweden’s Baltic Coast invites selected guests to stay for free this autumn … so long as they keep noise levels below 45 decibels. This unique initiative from Visit Skåne highlights the beauty of the coast’s natural quietness amidst growing concern around environmental noise.

The cabin, aptly named Stay Quiet, sits on the eastern coastline of Skåne, overlooking the Baltic Sea. How can you stay here? Book a stay Sept. 29–Oct. 16. A decibel meter will be located in the cabin to monitor noise levels. The maximum level permitted is 45 decibels, or about the level of a soft whisper.

If you exceed this noise limit? You’ll be asked to end your stay.

Despite the fun challenge and initiative, there is a serious message behind it all. Environmental noise is noted as a growing and big public health issue across Europe. According to the European Environment Agency’s 2025 assessment, more than one in five Europeans are exposed to harmful levels of transport noise, with road traffic the largest source.

Skåne, meanwhile, has some of the quietest places in Sweden. In fact, the destination launched a Map of Quietude in 2024, naming several regions boasting near silence, with just nature as your noise. Five of Skåne’s quietest spots are Dörröds fälad (37 dB), Håkull (37 dB), Klöva hallar (38 dB), Natthall (38 dB) and Stockamöllan (39 dB).
