Destinations / Europe

Looking for a stay in a picturesque spot with modern amenities and some serious historic appeal — all for a steal? It sounds too good to be true, but that’s what you can expect at Hotel Hanswirt. This property in South Tyrol, Italy, dates back to the 14th century and offers a 4-star experience with a lot to love.

The property’s first recorded mention comes from 1357, and the same family has owned the hotel since the 1500s. A Roman milestone from 46 A.D. sits in front of the inn. In other words, travelers have been flocking to this spot for centuries.

However, Hotel Hanswirt has hardly sacrificed guest comfort for historic appeal and authenticity. It also offers a Mediterranean garden and wellness park with a spa, year-round pools and saunas. The award-winning restaurant focuses on regional cuisine. The 22 guestrooms and suites overlook the gardens and mountains. Activities include hiking, golfing and cycling, and guests enjoy complimentary access to public transit and area museums. The whole time, you’re just a short drive from the spa town of Merano.
