The BuzzClip: Wearable Assistive Tech for the Blind

Products / Technology

The BuzzClip is new wearable assistive technology helping the visually impaired navigate the world around them. The product uses ultrasound designed to detect obstacles that may lie directly in the path of those living with vision loss in order to help them move freely and safely while exploring the world around them.

Important features include the accurate proximity sensor, capable of detecting anything coming into its range of detection. The senor ensures an accurately measured distance to any nearby obstacles regardless of lighting conditions and transparency of the object. This capability is made possible by the sending and receiving of sound waves. Received information is then relayed back to the user instantly through intuitive vibrations.

With two selectable ranges, including a one-meter range and a two-meter range, the BuzzClip allows users to gauge the distance to an object through vibrations. The frequency and intensity of the vibrations increase as an obstacle gets closer to the user, and three quick vibrations are sent when the user is at about an arm’s length away from obstacles, warning the user to stop and make sure the path is clear.

The battery of the BuzzClip lasts up to 10 hours and can be charged with any standard micro-USB cable. Specific vibrations alert the user to different battery levels, with four vibrations indicating the battery is above 75 percent; three telling it is between 50 and 75 percent; two indicating it is between 25 and 50 percent; and one telling it is less than 25 percent.

More than convenient, the BuzzClip is also discreet, capable of being clipped onto shirts, jeans, sweatpants and more. Multiple BuzzClips can also be used at once for greater coverage, giving a blind or partially sighted user much more information about their immediate surroundings. For example, one on the chest and one on each sleeve to protect front and sides.

The BuzzClip ran a successful IndieGogo campaign earlier this year, earning more than $59,000 in support of the project. Prices start from $129.
