See The Sistine Chapel in Texas — no, really. The Sistine Chapel Experience is now live in Austin, and offers a digital recreation of the landmark, with Michelangelo’s frescoes on full display.
The experience stretches over three galleries (one focuses on the chapel’s history, the second displays a 15-minute movie detailing the project and the third is the actual Sistine Chapel recreation) and 25,000 square feet in a former retail center, and features more than 50 laser projectors and a lowered ceiling so visitors can get up close and personal with the recreated works. The exhibit came together over 65 days of photographic work and required $5 million in production, pulling together 4 million images and 270,000 reproductions.
Beyond the artistic recreations, the experience also displays a reproduction of a Gutenberg Bible and a full-scale replica of Michelangelo’s Pietà.
The experience, on display through April 26, is open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–7 p.m., at Barton Creek Square Mall. Tickets are $30 for those ages 6 and up (children under 6 are free) and the experience requires about 45–90 minutes.
