This Costa Rica Hotel Takes Sustainability to a New Level

Punta Islita, Autograph Collection is situated in one of the world’s “Blue Zones,” regions where residents typically live longer due to their unique diets and ways of life. The property has embraced the Blue Zone lifestyle, but takes its commitment to longevity and improving both the health of visitors and of the planet to entirely new levels with recently introduced initiatives.

The hotel now launched a permaculture farm that will supply 100 percent of the hotel’s bar and restaurant food needs. The farm grows more than 30 species of fruits, vegetables and more, and also provides food to the local community while providing educational experiences to guests.

Additionally, in a show of social sustainability, the hotel has launched a women’s artist cooperative that allows local women to earn through selling art and offering classes. In 2023, the hotel said local women artisans produced $18,000 in revenue from selling artwork and $10,000 from hosting classes. The earnings are split, with 70 percent going to the women and 30 percent covering administrative fees.

Giving guests yet another way to connect with the local community, the property also offers special experiences at nearby Islita Museum, Costa Rica’s only open-air, contemporary art museum. A traditional breakfast at the museum, made with ingredients from the permaculture farm, allows guests the opportunity to meet and learn from the locals.
