It’s time travelers go beyond the bright lights of Budapest and explore Hungary’s natural and cultural treasures, specifically Hortobágy National Park. The UNESCO World Heritage site offers a chance for travelers to experience natural beauty and plenty of history.

Each October, the park comes alive during St. Demeter’s Day Cattle Drive. During this time, herds of iconic Hungarian grey cattle return from the summer pastures in a colorful festival of music, food and community spirit. Often known as the Great Plain or “Puszta,” Hortobágy is the place where centuries-old traditions meet wild nature, and visitors and locals alike can watch herders in action, see the rare Nonius horse breed and join the St. Demeter’s Day celebration. Here are some highlights of the St. Demeter’s Day at Hortobágy National Park:
Unforgettable Experience
The sight of hundreds of Hungarian grey cattle being herded back to the village across plains is truly one-of-a-kind, as well as symbolic of Hungary’s rural traditions. It is a cultural experience that can’t be seen in many other places.
Centuries-Old Traditions
To immerse travelers in a cultural experience, locals dress up in folk costumes, play traditional music and make regional dishes. Visitors are encouraged to join in and feel part of a living heritage and tradition that has been passed down by generations.
