Tips / Destination

Angra dos Reis is a natural wonder, located in southwest Rio de Janeiro along the Costa Verde (Green Coast). Comprised of 365 islands; steep, forested coastline; national parks; and beautiful beaches, it’s worth a trip if you’re visiting Rio.

The area is ideal for cruising, snorkeling, hiking and beach lounging, and the island’s main village, located on Vila do Abraão, offers restaurants, bars and historic landmarks like St. Sebastian Church.

Getting there is easy, with regular, inexpensive bus service running from Rio. From there, ferry services are available to Ilha Grande, the area’s largest island, offering hiking trails, waterfalls and pristine deserted beaches. While on the island, explore the 8,650-acre Ilha Grande State Park, which contains the Praia do Sul Biological Reserve, Aventureiro Sustainable Development Reserve and the Tamoios Ecological Station.

Several companies charter boats from the Angra dos Reis main port to several islands, such as Happy Charter, and tour companies offer island-hopping excursions, including Angra Way Travel & Tours, Angra Passeios and Lumina Charters.

Angra dos Reis makes an excellent daytrip from Rio, but accommodations are available if you’re staying longer. Top hotels include Mercure Angra dos Reis, Promenade Costabella Hotel & Marina and Jamanta – Pousada e Operadora de Mergulho.
