Portugal has tons of unique things to explore, but one of the quirkiest attractions definitely has to be the popular toboggan rides on Madeira Island. The Monte Toboggan Run first originated in the 19th century and has remained a beloved tradition ever since.
The winding, slippery streets from Monte down to Funchal provide the perfect course for a sled and tourists from all over fly in to experience the journey. It’s a fast-paced, somewhat exhilarating trek down a hill on wicker sleds. The toboggans are pushed and steered by two men, referred to as carreiros, wearing all white and a pair of rubber boots used as brakes. You’re basically putting your life in their hands, but what’s life without a little risk?
The carreiros are highly trained and skilled; you won’t be sharing the road with any cars, so you don’t have to be too worried.
The total ride last roughly 10 minutes from beginning to end over the course of 2 kilometers, after which you’ll be allowed to change your underwear. If you’re on Madeira and looking for a unique way to explore the sights, the Monte Toboggan Run is open year-round except on holidays.
