Literary fans rejoice — here are the Top 5 sites to see if you’re in love with all things Austen.
See where the author spent a good portion of the end of her life in Hampshire, but also check out a lot of cool Austen artifacts, such as her writing desk and many books. The tour is relatively quick, but you can stick around for as long as you like and even picnic on the grounds, as you pretend you’re an Austen heroine. If you want to pay your respects afterward, Austen’s crypt is only a short ways off, at Winchester Cathedral.
If you’re more into the settings of the many Austen movies rather than the life of the author, you’ll be happy to know Basildon Park was a shooting location for the 2005 version of Pride and Prejudice. Standing in as Netherfield, it’s a gorgeous spot and tours are available all year-round. Plus, you can spot Basildon Park in other historic shows and films as well, like Downton Abbey.
Another shooting location for the 2005 adaption, Stourhead Landscape Gardens was the setting for Darcy’s initial proposal to Elizabeth. Even if you’re traveling with individuals who aren’t quite into all things Austen, they’ll still enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Really, the 2005 adaption is the best, so here’s another filming location. Chatsworth House not only was named in the novel, but it’s also Pemberley in the film. Make sure to be in town in time for one of the regular Pride and Prejudice-themed events!
Not everything can be about Pride and Prejudice. Check out the shooting location for the ballroom scene in the 1996 adaption of Emma, the version with Gwyneth Paltrow. The house also has a museum, gallery and bookstore.
