Game of Thrones
Several destinations around the world are seeing a sharp rise in tourism thanks to the popular Game of Thrones series. Fans can visit Jökulsárlón, Iceland’s glacier lagoon and hike the Svínafellsjökull glacier, the filming site of the show’s “North of the Wall” shots.
Feel like a Stark at Castle Ward in Northern Ireland, used as a stand-in for Winterfell, or visit Ballintoy Harbour, the site of the show’s Iron Islands. Also in Ireland are the Mourne Mountains, which portrayed parts of Vaes Dothrak, home to the Dothraki.
In Malta, Mdina’s Fort Manoel served as the Sept of Baelor, the holiest spot in Westeros, and the island’s Azure Window was the location for the Dothraki wedding in the first season. In Croatia, fans can visit Dubrovnik, where most of the King’s Landing scenes filmed. Fort Lovrijenac was used as the show’s Red Keep.
Westworld
Utah’s iconic red rocks and expansive skies provided the scene for sci-fi thriller Westworld. Ride along State Route 128 outside Arches National Park, straight into the heart of the show, and tour Dead Horse Point State Park, the landscape where the mysterious Man in Black resided.
The Crown
The Crown chronicles the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II, and several locations can be found in London. Buckingham Palace scenes were shot at the nearby Lancaster House, and Ely Cathedral stood in for Westminster Abbey — the backdrop for the Queen’s wedding and Coronation. Eltham Palace also played an important role as the Queen’s quarters of the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Bermuda Government House and the HMSS Queen Mary.
Downtown Abbey
The primary filming for the hit period drama Downton Abbey took place at the historic Highclere Castle in West Berkshire, England. In the show, the castle is the residence of the Earl of Grantham and his family, and today the castle is the resident of the 8th Earl of Carnarvon and his wife. Much of the castle and its grounds are open to the public 60–70 days a year.
