Never got around to getting that REAL ID? This month, the Transportation Security Administration is giving you another option when you go to the airport: TSA ConfirmID.
No more than 10 days before a flight, travelers without an acceptable form of ID can go on to the TSA website and pay a $45 ConfirmID fee, while also providing some basic identification information and their travel start date. Then, on the day of their flight, travelers show their fee receipt at the TSA checkpoint. Then, a TSA officer will undertake an identification process, which requires 10–30 extra minutes.
Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administrator for TSA Adam Stahl noted, “This fee ensures that non-compliant travelers, not taxpayers, cover the cost of processing travelers without acceptable IDs…”
The TSA warns if travelers do not pay for TSA ConfirmID ahead of their trip, and if they do not have another suitable form of identification, they may be asked to leave the security line, pay the TSA ConfirmID fee and only then return to the TSA checkpoint. It’s also advisable to build an extra half hour into your travel plans to account for the potential 30-minute identification process.
