Mercer County, West Virginia, sits along the state’s southern border, next to Virginia. It’s a relatively small county, with no major cities, but there’s still plenty to do in this destination, no matter the type of traveler you are.
For those interested in area history, Millionaire Row in Bramwell features historic homes aplenty and a unique status — at one point in history, the town boasted the most millionaires per capita. Then, in nearby Princeton, Princeton Railroad Museum offers a look at the region’s transportation history.
Outdoor adventure is where Mercer County really shines. Head to Pinnacle Rock State Park, where the pinnacle in the name is a 3,100-foot sandstone formation. Hiking and rock climbing are on the docket, and some hiking trails are even suitable for children. Elsewhere throughout the county, you can find other outdoor activities like zip line tours, kayaking, mountain biking and fishing.
Additionally, Mercer County puts travelers within easy access of the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System, a favorite with ATV enthusiasts. There are more than 700 miles of off-road trails to explore, with ATV resorts located along the trail system, so you can plan an entire getaway centered around driving through the pristine and rugged landscapes.
