Don’t assume you need to visit an ocean-side locale in order to enjoy a refreshing, water-focused getaway this summer. The Great Lakes beckon with long stretches of sandy shoreline, dramatic rocky coasts and all the water sports fun you could want.
Take Marquette County, Michigan, for example. On Lake Superior, this is a destination that’s yet to really become overcrowded while still offering loads of shoreline and freshwater access.

So, if you head there, what should you plan to do?
Obviously, spend time out on the water, but Lake Superior isn’t your only option. The region boasts 83 miles of shoreline, 150-plus streams and more than 300 inland lakes, so you have plenty of space and choices to get out and explore. Consider kayaking or paddleboarding, heading out on a fishing charter, or simply laying out on the sand and dipping in for a swim.
When you’re not enjoying the waterfront, hiking and cycling are both potential options. The Iron Ore Heritage Trail is a 47-mile, multiuse route that follows a historic mining corridor.

Then, once you’ve had your fill for the day, visit the actual city of Marquette (the seat of the county with the same name). It’s the Upper Peninsula’s largest city and provides a charming downtown and plenty of places for shopping and dining.
