For hiking near Atlanta, there’s no better pick than Cobb County, Georgia, only a short drive from the city, but touting multiple hiking options for a variety of skill levels.
For history lovers, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park offers a visitor center with exhibits, as well as 16 miles of hiking trails. You can hike up to see Confederate entrenchments and earthworks, or take Cheatham Hill Trail for a nearly 6-mile, round-trip excursion that’s relatively moderate and dog-friendly.

If you’re looking for something a little longer, you can take the 11-mile Battlefield Trail loop to the summits of Kennesaw Mountain and Little Kennesaw, from which you can enjoy views of Atlanta in the distance.
Sope Creek Trail, meanwhile, is located within Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, and allows you to visit the ruins of a Civil War-era paper mill. Other Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area options include the scenic Palisades East and West trails and Island Ford riverside trails.
