Ledger Plaza Bissau Hotel is right in the middle of the action in the capital city, and known as the most luxurious spot in town. Rooms are comfortable and there is a pool and buffet restaurant that attracts members of the small expat community on Sundays.

Head to the Parque Nacional de Cantanhez and stay in the Ecocantanhez-Jemberém ecotourism project. There are three thatched bungalows and campgrounds to choose from. It’s hardly luxury, but it’s a lovely place to stay.

African Ecolodge Angurman is found in the Bijagos Archipelago, a group of 88 islands known for great beaches and vibrant local culture. The retreat is run by a French expatriate, who offers simple bungalows on the shore and meals served under a huge baobab tree.

The archipelago can be difficult to get around under your own steam, so consider a berth on the Africa Princess catamaran. It can sleep up to eight people and conducts regular itineraries around the islands.

For a relaxing beach experience you can also head to Ponta Anchaca on Ilha de Rubane. Stretch out on the sand or go on fishing or kayaking trips.
