Destinations / North America

When you think of great fall leaf-peeping destinations, you might consider Vermont or Asheville, Oregon or Colorado — but Cleveland? There are several reasons why you ought to consider this Midwestern city for your autumn getaway.

For one, there’s a spectacularly scenic national park within a short drive from downtown. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, currently celebrating its 50th birthday, offers a wealth of recreation opportunities to allow you to take in the foliage, including hiking, biking, paddling, horseback riding and more.

If you’re specifically coming to the national park for leaf-peeping, the park recommends visiting on weekdays, morning or later in the day, to avoid crowds. The best spots? Take Oak Hill Trail in early October, Brandywine Gorge Trail in mid-October or the Ledges area trails in late October.

Not really the outdoorsy activity type, but still want to see the views? Consider a ride on Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad. In addition to national park excursions, the railroad also offers happy hour rides and themed events, such as the Oktoberfest train experience Sept. 19.

During your stay, basecamp out of the new Fidelity Hotel, opened earlier this year in a 105-year-old building.
