WalletHub recently revealed its study on the best states for a summer road trip. The WalletHub team compared all 50 states across three dimensions (cost, safety and activities), using 32 key metrics to determine the best destinations for road trippers this summer. Key metrics used in the study include average gas prices, quality of roads and number of attractions.
Texas topped the list due in part to its high number of attractions. It ranked highest for accommodations and restaurants per capita, ensuring travelers have plenty of lodging and dining options. Minnesota took the second spot thanks to its safety ranking. The state has the third-fewest fatalities per million miles traveled. Rounding out the top three, New York is the place to be for road trippers interested in attractions, nightlife activities and National Historic Landmarks.
The top 10 road trip states for summer are:
- Texas
- Minnesota
- New York
- Louisiana
- Florida
- Ohio
- North Carolina
- Wyoming
- Maine
- Pennsylvania
The states that didn’t score as well? Delaware, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Montana and Vermont were deemed the five worst states for summer road trips. These states were among the lowest for scenic byways. Vermont was in the top five for most car thefts per capita. Connecticut had the highest average cost of car repairs of all the states.
