Hostels are a great way to save money when traveling, but they’re also known for hosting somewhat of a younger, rowdier crowd than you might be used to. Staying up and partying with strangers late into the night was a great time in your 20s, but once 30 comes along you’re more likely to want a good night’s rest. Here are some ways to survive staying in a hostel with a little age on you.
Bring Headphones
Not all hostels are loud throughout the night, but it’s likely you’ll have at least a few guests up and drinking until the early morning hours. To tune them out, be sure to pack a pair of headphones that’ll cancel out the noise.
Go for a Private Room
Most hostels these days offer many options for sleeping arrangements, including private rooms. They’re a little more pricey, but still cheaper than a hotel, and you get all the social interaction that makes hostels great while also having a place to retreat to when you’re ready for some alone time.
Wake Up Early
Most backpackers have a habit of sleeping in after a night of drinking, so beat the bathroom line and get up early. That way you’ll be free to wash, cook and clean while everyone else is still in bed.
Make Friends
While 18–21-year olds might not be your ideal travel partners, but they do bring an air of youthful exuberance that certainly livens up the place. It’s fun to get to know them and share stories, rather than being the old geezer who never leaves his room. Hang out in the common areas and talk to people; you’ll find they can offer great tips on things to do and see.
