Travel season is ramping up, and that means scams are also running rampant in popular cities across the world. If you’re planning a trip to Rome, Italy, stay informed and enjoy a smooth trip with these important tips from Walks of Italy’s Italian Tours director Valentina Telese.
Use Licensed Tour Guides
Hire only certified guides for tours at major attractions. Unlicensed guides could not only give inaccurate information but also could be denied access to restricted areas.
Avoid Tourist Trap Restaurants
You can be sure dining near landmarks like the Colosseum or Trevi Fountain will be overpriced and/or tourist-focused over authentic. Restaurants with staff actively trying to lure you in with menus or calls is a common sign of a tourist trap.
Book Only Through Official Channels
When purchasing tickets and tours, always do it through verified websites, licensed tour providers and ticket offices. Third-party sellers or on-the-day companies offering “skip-the-line” access are risky. For instance, at the Vatican and Colosseum you’ll often find unofficial sellers approach tourists with promises of bypassing long lines.
Beware of Photo and Gift Scams
Don’t accept posed photos from street performers or costumed characters (like gladiators near the Colosseum), and avoid accepting unsolicited gifts. Once photos are taken, vendors often then demand payment.
Keep Your Personal Items Secure
Use a crossbody bag or money belt, and be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded areas and on public transport. Pickpockets are common in Rome, especially on routes like Bus 64, which links Termini Station with the Vatican. This route is often called “Pickpocket Express.”
