When you think of skiing in the Adirondacks, you might envision large ski areas and Olympic ski spots like Whiteface Mountain. However, if you’re looking for a regional spot that’s a little less crowded, a little more affordable and a little smaller (we’re not all Olympic skiers, after all), you do have options without leaving the region.
In Old Forge, McCauley Mountain offers just more than 600 feet of vertical, inclusive of 21 slopes and trails, ranging from beginner-friendly to double-black diamond options. For those who aren’t into downhill skiing, cross-country skiing is also an option.
In Saranac Lake, Mt. Pisgah Recreation Center is easily accessible, just a short drive from town. After you’ve gotten your fill of skiing, you can be back in the village enjoying a delicious dinner, drinks or shopping within mere minutes.
For family-friendly skiing and affordable rates, as well as skiing the more advanced in your crew will appreciate, try Titus Mountain in Malone. The top-rated ski area also offers tubing, night skiing and terrain parks.
In Speculator, Oak Mountain offers not just your typical skiing and snowboarding, but also lessons, tubing and snowshoeing. The best part? Snowshoeing is free, so long as you arrive at the base lodge before 2 p.m. Snowshoe rentals are available for a minimal fee.
